Frequently cases occur each season where a club, although it pays a large amount to the Government in taxation, makes a substantial loss over its meeting, consequently many racing clubs have reached the stage when it has to be seriously considered by their committees whether they can carry on under the special forms of taxation which have been imposed since 1910. The breaking-point has been reached, as the following instance will show. The Canterbury Jockey Club, at its recent one-day meeting, held on February 19 last, collected £1,589 in taxation for the Government, but made a loss of £434 on the meeting.
