By racing and hunt clubs . . 489,546 8 7 By trotting clubs 176,685 17 8 Total £666,232 6 3 The total liabilities of racing and hunt clubs, not including trotting clubs as at March 22, 1924, amounted to £554,424 7s 6d, and have increased considerably since that date. The taxation paid by racing and hunt clubs, not including trotting clubs, during the 1925-26 season amounted to £489,546 8s 7d, which is only £64,878 2s lid short of their total liabilities as at March 22, 1924. Frequently cases occur each season where a club, although it pays a large amount to the Government in taxation, makes a substantial loss over its meeting, consequently many racing clubs have reached the stage when it has to be seriously considered by their committees whether they can carry on under the special forms of taxation which have been imposed since 1910. The breaking-point has been reached, as the following instance will show. The Canterbury Jockey Club, at its recent one-day meeting, held on February 19 last, collected £1,589 in taxation for the Government, but made a loss of £434 on the meeting.
