Scores Lose Lives In Saxony Floods
A FEARFUL CALAMITY By Cable. —Press Association. — Copyright. Received 12.47 p.m. BERLIN, Sunday. DETAILS of the cloudburst in the Elbe Valley are most shocking. There are 109 dead in Berggiesshubel alone, many being visitors spending the summer holiday at this quiet spa.. A telephone message warned the Mayor of the danger. When he found the river was rising rapidly he sent messengers hurrying through the town. With a quarter of an hour the messengers were forced to take refuge in the principal hotel, whence they watched house after house being undermined by the swelling flood which rose 15 feet in as many minutes. Some of the inhabitants had not even time to reach upper floors. They were trapped in bedrooms. Others were killed through houses collapsing. There are scenes of indescribable desolation. Wherever the floods have subsided, there is a wilderness of mud, intermingled with the carcases of swine, sheep and cattle over miles of fertile land.
