BIG PLUNGES

NAGS—three kings BACKED FOR THE TWO CUPS For £ SO,OOO a Caulfield and Melbourne Cup double was backed the day after the handicaps appeared. The horses coupled were Three Kings and Kaos, a couple of good stayers, both run by the same owner and trained in Victoria with a special eye to this big betting combination. If they succeed, somebody will rake in within a few pounds of £IOO,OOO with bets and prize money, too. Three Kings was in Sydney in the autumn, but failed in the Tocal Handicap and ran only third in the Warwick Cup. He returned for the King’s Cup at Flemington at the end of April and failed there, too. But going on to South Australia he won the Adelaide Cup a week later with 8.3 on his back. He has 8.5 in the Caulfield Cup. SON OF MARTIAN Kao’s minor placings in big races are well known. He was third in the Sydney Cup a year ago, and then second in both the Melbourne and Australian Cups to Spearfelt. Perhaps, with Spearfelt out of the way, this notable stayer might succeed in the Melbourne Cup this year. The double has been backed during the last few days. EARLY PLUNGES Of Sydney’s biggest bookmaker £40,000 at long odds was secured in one parcel. Others laid lesser amounts, and over £20,000 was taken in Melbourne. It is one of the most notable early plunges associated with such important events. Another Melbourne horse backed was Kawallah for the Caulfield Cup. He won at Flemington early last month over a mile and a-half, but defeated only moderate horses.

Sydney lists issued on the cups differed slightly from those of Melbourne

operators. Here Gothic, Amounis, and The Banker share Caulfield Cup favouritism, while Limerick is a straight-out pick for the Melbourne.

with at Trentham, but he is working well at Awapuni, and might show up before the end of the meeting. OUT OF FAVOUR

Since Birkenella left Trentham an effort has been made to get him to mend his ways, and latest reports are that he is improving. However, though he won the Wellington Steeplechase a year ago, he wil be one of the outsiders of the field next Tuesday, as no one wants to be on him after his failures at Wingatui. R. J. Mackie is thinking of doing a little riding at the Wellington meeting. He has made a good recovery from his operation, and has been riding a lot of work at Awapuni, but it is some months since he appeared in public. He will ride for the Higgins and Kemball stables in the new season, which commences at the beginning of next month.

Mister Gamp is reported to have done as good a gallop at Awapuni over a mile as Merry Damon, with whom he was associated in the trial. On that showing Mister Gamp ought to stand more than an ordinary chance at the Wellington meeting, as he is engaged in hack races, while Merry Damon is one of the top-weights in the open mile event. GREEN’S MOUNT T. Green is to ride Merry Damon in the Whyte Memorial at Trentham on Tuesday, and in any other races he contests at the meeting. The exAucklander is as well as ever he has been since coming down this way, and has a chance in the race mentioned. If he wins he will return a substantial price. Agrion and Pliilliplc, under the care of R. J. Mason, left Wellington for Sydney this afternoon. The latest horse to come into favoui for the Whyte Memorial is Sun Up, who ran good races at the Auckland winter meeting, and was in a place there. Visiting Southerners like his chance. They are judging him on his track work. M/yjNGA DOUBTFUL There is some doubt now as to whether Maunga will come to the Wellington meeting, but he is said to be regarded as a certain visitor to the Grand Kational meeting next month. The weights to be carried in the Trial Plate, which is to be run over the six furlong course at Trentham on Tuesday, are as follows:—Card Trick. 10.0: Greengrocer, 10.0: Romantic. 9.13: Watzer, 9.13; Town Hall, 9.13; Cornstalk, 9.13; Fairy Tidings, 9.13; Avro, 9.11; Catapult, 9.11; Flitter. 9.11; Lucre, 9.11; Lady killer, 9.11; Oratrix, 9.11; Tameterangi, 9.11; Propeller, 9.11; Glengassy, 9.11; Arikiwai, 9.0; Bourse, 9.0; Radion, 9.0; Hannibel, 9.0; Catkin, 9.0; Lady Limond, 9.0; Aro de Val, 9.0; Honey, 9.0; Merry Mint, 9.0; Quantum, 9.0.
