THE WELLINGTON MEETING

JOTTINGS FROM THE TRENTHAM TRACKCANDIDATE’S PROSPECTS (Special to THE SUN.) WELLINGTON, Friday. There was a big army of horses on the track at Trentham this morning, but as a number of them had arrived only the previous day the amount of interesting work was rather small. To-morrow will be the big day, and we expect to see some interesting gallops and good schooling. No horse looks to have improved more since the Auckland winter meeting than Kamehameha has done. He has not big weights to carry, and should be among those who will go close to the money at Trentham, if he does not actually win. Taking him on his appearance one would not think he was a horse that a while ago was regarded as a failure. .Hyama is not among the fancied division for hack hurdle events at the Wellington winter meeting, but his schooling display this morning made a number of friends for him. He was sent over eight flights of hurdles and got through the job in quite decent style. He is to be ridden in his engagements at the meeting by A. Jenkins, who has been schooling him. SOUTHERN SPRINTERS Arpent and Royal Head are new arrivals from the South. Arpent looks exceedingly well, and some of the Southerners fancy he will be among those who run prominently next week. One of the most discussed horses on the track was the Great Northern Steeplechase winner, Beau Cavalier,, as a number of the local touts had never seen him before. He did his work on the flat and did it very nicely, but what pleased most about him was his condition. He looks a better horse now than he did on the day he won at. Ellerslie, and bears evidence of having been put through a very solid preparation. If he schools well tomorrow there is no fear of his being

ousted from the position of favourite for the Wellington Steeplechase, which is to be run on Tuesday. LOOKS THE PART Scamp is here, and of the few South Island horses who will take part in the Wellington Steeplechase he will be the best backed, unless Tuki finds greater support. He looks the cut of a cross-country horse, and one can easily understand why the Southerners think well of him. He will only have to show a. liking for the fences here and he will be in big demand on the machine on Tuesday, as he has already advanced in favour since putting in an appearance. As expected, Kawini has improved since the Northern meeting, and like Beau Cavalier he shows ample signs of having had the work slipped into him. ALL. IN THE DARK Inquirers were askihg at the track to-day as to who Kawini’s rider would be, but definite information was not obtained. W. Bowden rode him in the Winter Steeplechase on the last day of the Auckland meeting, when he ran second to Tuki, but Bowden also was doing the riding of Mr. Paterson’s horses that day, and as he won on Zircon and Royal Fo*m, might have the mounts on them here It seems possible that Cartoon 'will not be present at the Wellington meeting, and if that is the case it will mean a further reduction in the field for the Wellington Steeplechase. Dick worked with great freedom, but after his failures at Auckland he is right out of favour, and if he can stage a come-back he will pay a rare dividend. He will not be schooled before the meeting. KEPT TO THE COLLAR Zircon has built up considerably since he raced at Ellerslie, and the interval has done him the world of good. At the same time he appears to have been fully kept up to his work, for he looks solid and muscular. While doing pace work King Lu showed a keenness for his work, which attracted attention to him, and if he gallops well hereHbefore the meeting lio can be relied on to run a good race on Tuesday, as there is nothing wrong % with his condition and he loves the mud. He will be ridden in the Stewards Handicap by A. Tinker. WEDDING MARCH FOR STEEPLES? Three rounds at a solid pace were allotted to Wedding March, who does not look robust, but went all right in his work. There was an impression for a while that he would contest the hurdle races here and not the big steeplechase, but the opinion is expressed now that he will take his place in Tuesday’s field for the Wellington Steeplechase. Tuki lias arrived at the scene of action, and is working satisfactorily. He does not strike the eye as a handsome horse, but he will see the journey out if condition is the deciding factor. There is a disposition to go oft' Master Doon for the Whyte Memorial, but why it is hard to understand, as there does not appear to be anything in better trim among the candidates for that event. No doubt, before the day of the race he will be reinstated as one of the first fancies of punters. PLEASED WATCHERS One of the Aucklanders who will be right in the first line with bettors on Tuesday will be Delightment. He has arrived at the course safe and sound, and got through easy work this morning in first-class style. It was a treat to see him making light of the heavy ground.

It seems to be doubtful who is to ride Alloway in his races at Trentham. Some reports say that C. Browne will be in the saddle, and others that D. C. Watts will have the mount.

Pangolin might need a race before forward enough to back in the strong company which will be met
