EVER-READY COMMITTEE The Victoria League Ever-Ready Sub-Committee gave a most enjoyable concert at the Evelyn Firth Home on Tuesday evening. Songs were given by the Misses Faire, Hutchison and Renner; recitations by the Misses Adkin, Jourdain, and Redstone; a violin solo by Miss Venables; a piano solo by Miss Allen, while Miss Mobberley contributed a musical monologue.

The Misses Venables and Ballantyne acted as accompanists.

“Let well alone” would seem to be the watchword of the leading Paris houses. In other words, why bother to experiment with bold new ideas when Madame Everywoman is so manifestly content with the simple smartness that has more or less standardised modern dressing? Even designers who have made their reputations on originality are now concentrating on clever variations of accepted themes, rather than trying out startling new fashions that would be turned down by all but the very restricted minority who still hanker after the bizarre.

It is true that those variations do lometimes touch the bizarre. As, for example, the ultimate evolution of the sports suit, which consists in a pair of silver moire breeches worn with a little bolero en suite. But these exoticisms just make a mannequin’s holiday, as it were, and enable the dress artists to refute any charge of monotony that may be brought against them.

Lemon-juice can be used as an emergency polish for black or brown sho^s.

To bleach clothes that have become a bad colour, wash and boil in the usual way, dip in deep blue-water and hang dripping-wet in the sun.
