Y.W.C.A. NEWS

MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting: of the Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs. C. W. Garrard, president, in the chair. After the devotional period, led by the president, a long - agenda of business was dealt with. A need had been felt for some considerable time for a regular gathering of women members, and it was decided that a meeting be held monthly, the first one to be held on July 20, when Miss Ethel Law, national general secretary for the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand, would be the speaker. Miss Law was to arrive in Auckland next week to search for a suitable place at which to hold the summer conference and convention.

It was reported that the World Fellowship Fair had been very successful, the net profit being £l5O. The resignation of Miss Sellars as house matron was received with regret, this being on account of her approaching marriage. Appreciation was ex v pressed of the good work which Miss Sellars had done as house matron and with the boarders’ house in the emergency accommodation at Queen Street-

Miss Alice Smith, formerly matron at the Y.W.C.A. holiday house, was appointed to take Miss Sellars’s place.

Miss Jean Begg, general secretary, reported on the laying of the founda-tion-stone of the new hostel and of the women members’ “At Home” following, and of the progress of the different departments.

The holiday house had been used by various groups, including a group of 26 Presbyterian Bible Class leaders last week-end, and for the next few weeks the week-ends had been booked up by Y.W.C.A. club groups. The Business Girls’ Club in Customs Street had held a successful tea party, with Miss Jean Schoen, American journalist, as their guest. Miss Schoen had given a fine racy account of her travelling experiences. The Mothers’ Club had had its fourth birthday, and now had an average weekly attendance of 50 members. A Sunday service for girls had been held, with Miss Leetch, of the Zenana Mission, as speaker. Various parties had been held, in both the senior and girls’ departments, and the hostel girls had held a very successful party to celebrate the laying of the foundation-stone. In preparation for the annual election of officers, a Nominations Committee was appointed, as follows:—Mrs. Todd Smith (chair), Mesdames G. H. Wilson, M. Rudd, L. Clark, Misses I. Perry and A. C. Button.
