FAMOUS POLISH PIANIST Private advices received state that the first concert given by Friedman in Wellington on Thursday evening, was a repetition of his success which this artist achieved in Sydney, and the opinion of the southern critics is that he is the supreme artist at the piano. His visit to Auckland is being looked forward to by music lovers for he comes to us at the zenith of his power and fame. He is still in the early forties, and thus we hear a world’s artist at his prime. Many honours have been conferred on Ignaz Friedman, but none greater than that he was chosen from all the world’s pianists to play the Beethoven Concerto at the Beethoven Centenary in Vienna last March. Three days later he repeated the pianoforte Concerto of Beethoven with the Vienna Orchestra under the conductorship of Weingartner His last appearances in London were in the Albert Hall, in February last and this was the first occasion on which instead of playing on the platform a special platform was erected in the centre of the huge auditorium so that the audience of over 8,000 could hear him to best advantage. Recent papers from Sydney contain the musical critics' opinions and they are unanimous that he is the finest pianist ever heard in Australia. To Mr. E. J. Carroll, who is directing the tour, New Zealand is indebted for the visit of Friedman and concerts will be Siren in the Auckland Town Hall on July 16, Tuesday 19, and Thursday 21. The box plans for the three concerts will be open at Lewis R. Eady and Son. Ltd., on Monday morning, and attention is drawn to the liberal concesions offered to teachers, students and scholars from schools and colleges.
