Mr. G. G. Stewart, editor of the Railway Magazine,” Wellington, is at present visiting Auckland. Mr. W. Burton, general manager for jscw Zealand for the Fuller Proprietary, arrived in Auckland by the Limited this morning. Mr. V. H. Potter, M.P., arrived in Auckland this morning from Wellington. Mr- M. Moodabe returned to Auckland this morning by the Limited from Wellington. The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward is suffering from a cold, and will be confined to his home for some days. Mr. Paul Sanford, of Sanford’s, Ltd., sailed by the Maheno to-day for Australia on a holiday tour. The Rev. R. H. Trill, who has been appointed vicar of Te Awamutu, is a recent arrival from America. Mr. W. P. Rowe, the artist, left by train for Wellington yesterday evening to attend a meeting of the Maori Arts and Crafts Board. Mr. S. J. Stokes, of Auckland, left by the Maheno to-day to take up a position with the Government Survey Department of Western Australia. Mr. C. E. Macmillan, M.P. for Tauranga, has been granted further leave of absence, on account of illness, by the House of Representatives. The Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, lias gone to Stratford to open the winter show. The Minister will return to Wellington on Monday night. Mr. C. Walker, of the Department of Agriculture, Auckland, has been transferred to the Bay of Plenty, Rotorua District, with headquarters at Te Puke. He is an instructor in the fields division. His appointment is the result of the large increase in the distr? L in the last 10 years. Previously the department did not have an instructor stationed there. Major T. H. Dawson, C.M.G., C.8.E., has been appointed to command the Third Auckland Regiment, in place of Lieut.-Colonel IC. G. Dawson, V.D., who has gone on to the Reserve of Officers. He served in the South African War and left with the Main Body in command of the regiment he will now’ command. Major Dawson was mentioned in despatches. The formation of an Australian and New Zealand Board in Sydney is announced by the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, Ltd. Mr. Frank Murdoch and Mr. W. G. de Gruchy, late joint Manager of the company in Mew Zealand, have been appointed as directors. Mr. Warwick Gregory, of the Sydney office, succeeds Mr. de Gruchy as joint manager in New Zealand. Mr. Noel Carless has been appointed officer in charge of the Auckland City Council’s new water filtration plants at Nihotupu and Waitakere. Mr Carleas is a mechanical engineer, an associate of the Otago University School of Mines, with qualifications in chemistry, metallurgy, and surveying. He was formerly demonstrator in surveying at Otago University, and after serving in the Great War was for a year on the educational staff of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The University of New Zealand has received from its agent in London cabled information to the effect that the commissioners of the Royal Exhibition of 1851 have awarded the 1927 scholarship to Mr. G. M. Richardson, M.Sc., Victoria University College. Mr. Richardson gained his degree last year withfi rst-class honours in chemistry, his research work receiving very high praise from Professor Lap worth, who regards him as a young chemist of very high promise. His brother, who also took first-class honours in chemistry. gained an Imperial College scholarship and received his Ph.D. degree, from the University of London last year.
