Alburnias are idle and depressed. Business continues to be recorded in N.Z. Insurance, and* South British scrip is passing freely on a firm market. FIJI BOAT NEXT WEEK GLUT OF ONIONS Apples are meeting with a better demand in the city marts, though pears still remain dull of sale. A shipment of Australian fruit came to hand ex the Maheno on Tuesday. This will have to last for at least a fortnight as no Sydney fruit is expected next week. Stocks of bananas will be supplemented on Monday next by the arrival of the s.s. Tofua. The Waipahi from the Cook group is due about July 19. During the week a small consignment of Cook Island tomatoes came to hand ex Wellington and made from 10s to 13s a 221 b case. There is a slightly better demand for lemons. In the field and garden produce section inferior quality onions are a glut on the market, and difficult to quit even at bedrock prices. All other seasonal vegetables are well supplied. The potato market is slightly easier as a result of a weakening of values in the South. A good demand is experienced for eggs and butter, and eggs make from 2s 2d to 2s 3d a dozen, while good farmers’ butter makes up to Is 4d a lb. Well-bred and prime young poultry coming forward in restricted numbers meet with a firm mrket Poor quality birds are slow of sale.
