TWO WOMEN IN COURT THREE MONTHS FOR ONE On July 2, Margaret Speakman appeared at the Police Court charged with being idle and disorderly, but sentence was postponed for 14 days to enable her to meet her fiance in Newcastle. To-dav she was again charged with being idle and disorderly, but she stoutly denied her guilt. A Devonport constable said that Speakman had been drinking, keeping bad company, and holding carousals with male friends. “I want to get away from New Zealand,” she said. “I’ve been ill, and I only went to the house to get some luggage. She was convicted and remanded to appear for sentence on July 15. Mabel Isabella Stout, aged 33, who was found in the house with Margaret Speakman and her friends, pleaded guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly. “I see she has been convicted of similar charges each year since 1922,” said the magistrate. Mr. McKean. She was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment.
