TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
The old conflict between the horse and the motor is now almost forgotten, but is recalled by an item in a newspaper 25 years ago. Those were the days when horses on the road were frightened at the approach of the new monster, and the following instructions were given: “Horse owners are implored to accustom their animals to the motor, which has evidently come to stay. Horses should be firmly, but kindly, made to approach a car while the engine is running quietly. A little perseverence will generally induce them to eat a carrot or a lump of sugar off the bonnet of the car.
