ONE STEP FORWARD
ADDRESS-IN-REPLY LABOUR MOTION DEFEATED (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Labour amendment of noconfidence to the Address-in-Reply was defeated by 56 votes to 13, advancing the debate an important stage. The Nationalists, Mr. W. A. Veitch (Liberal) and Mr. H. Atmore (Independent) voted with the Government. The debate will be continued to-mor-row. The feature of to-day’s proceedings was the speech of the Minister of Finance, Hon. W. Downie Stewart. He made important statements regarding State advances and the recent increase in the bank rates.
In the Legislative Council the Address-in-Reply debate was continued. After two members had spoken the Council adjourned until tomorrow.
