DEATH OF OLD SETTLER

LATE MR. HENRY GREEN Mr. Henry Green, who died at his residence, Mason’s Avenue, Herne Bay, on Wednesday, at the age of 86. was the second son of Mr.- George Green, of Market Harborough, Leicestershire. Coming to New' Zealand in thi ship Lord Burleigh in 1860, Mr. Green worked for some weeks in the Waikato and later Joined the Intercolonial Royal Mail Company as purser. Many were his interesting memories of early Auckland, and Included the time when the port facilities consisted of a landing stage on piles, to which carts backed over the mud.

Mr. Green was in business as an auctioneer in Dunedin during the Gabriel’s Gully gold rush, and later became accountant to the Bank of New Zealand there. Later he was the manager of the National Bank in Wellington. Subsequent to a visit to England, he settled in Auckland, becoming attorney to the Hon. Thomas Russell, whom he represented on the directorates of various companies. Mr. Green was a member of the old Thames Road Board.

A keen chess player, Mr. Green was at one time president of the Auckland Chess Club. He was twice married. Miss Arthur, a feflow passenger by the Lord Burleigh, being his first wife. He t is survived by his second wife, whom

he married two or three years ago. Three brothers are in New Zealand. Mr. Samuel Green, Taieri, Mr. J. G. Green, Tauranga, and Mr. F. W. Green, Klhikihi.
