TROTTING

(By “ABAYDOS.”) NOTES AND COMMENTS FROM NEAR AND FAR A Chestnut. Dillon Dillon Gold. Avho won the Lyndhurst Trot at Ashburton on Saturday, is a five-year-old gelding by Harold Dillon from a mare called LluA'ia de Ora, that raced successfully a decade ago on the West Coast in the colours of Mr. H. W. Kitchingham. Dillon Gold annexed the Cheviot Cup in February, defeating a good favourite in M. B. Ariki, wdiich has since raced successfully in the South. Dillon Gold is one of the discounted chestnut Dillons. Will Soon Have a Vote The aged trotting gelding Amberite must have good claims for the distinction of being the oldest horse at present folloAAfing the game. In 1905 the son of Castaway figured on the “krect” card as an aged gelding, and when he last sported silk at Cambridge the sturdy little customer must have been someAvhere approaching his tAventieth birthday. J. Gee, Avho has handled the old chap for a considerable number of years, has generally been able to get some portion of prize money each season with the gelding. A Good Effort Mavis Wood, who won a tAvo-mile event at the Ashburton autumn fixture in good style, Avas expected to add another victory to her owner's credit on Saturday, but the Rodgerwood filly was forced to strike her colours to Dillon Gold. Mavis, however, ran a \*ery respectable race, and next season sne will be heard from on more pretensious occasions. Public Went Off The three-year-old gelding Pageant was Avell supported in the first trot at Ashburton on Saturday, but failed to finish in the money. When harnessed up for the second venture, he was allowed to start at any old price, and shoAA’ing up to better advantage Avas a good second to Sadie Huon. The few that stuck to Pageant received a good price, but it Avould not be difficult to imagine the feelings of those of his earlier admirers that let him slide.
