PRESBYTERY OPPOSES GAMING BILL
PROTEST FROM DUNEDIN Press Association. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. ‘ <r THE presbytery reiterates its strong opposition to gambling in all forms, and voices its protest against Sir George JHunter’s Gaming Bill now before Parliament, the effect of which ,if passed into law, would be to facilitate betting by means of the totalisator thorughout the Dominion.” This motion was carried by the Dunedin Presbytery at its meeting to-day. The mover was the Rev. Dr. Merrington. “I hope the presbytery will voice its protest, despite the'optimistic statements that it will be carried through the House of Parliament,” said Dr. Merrington. He pointed out that 32 race meetings were to be held In New Zealand from now to October, and if the bill was not opposed, gambling would grow to such an extent as was impossible at present. The Rev. J. D. Smith said that the more the activity by the Church the greater would be the influence on members of Parliament. The presbytery should urge its congregations to pass similar motions.
