TO THE TOTEM POLE

SCENE WITNESSED BY A BRAVE Redfeather: When the, sun cast the shadow of my teepee oast, with fleet foot I sped to the Birch Tree near the Lake of Many Waters. My fingers found the hollow ... I drew forth a red feather .... I was a member of the Wigwam. When the Pole Star gleamed above, I went again to the Birch. A message from my Chief had arrived. With keen eyes I scanned it and determined at once to pay a visit to the Wigwam. Softly unlashing my canoe from its mooring, I prepared for my journey. With noiseless paddle I sped through the glimmering waters along the Moonray Trail. I held the paddle poised in the air .... In the distance a great camp fire sent forth its friendly light. Mystic figures with swaying bodies danced about it ... . Suddenly the dancing ceased . . . All moved in a group to the Totem Pole ... A new name is being inscribed thereon and lo! it is that of . . . Silver Heel. THE LEAVES Little leaves are flying. As the wind comes sighing In the trees. Little leaves are scattered. As the trees are shattered In the breeze. On the ground they’re dropping, As the south wind, stopping, Dies away . Then The breeze comes, rising, With a strength surprising, Branches sway. Branches in the air crash, As the furious winds dash. Here and there. Still the leaves go sailing, Till at last, all failing, Boughs are bare. Flvirsg Cloud (Lesley du Faur). Better a cowslip with root than a prize carnation without it.
