SALES AT WESTFIELD

SHORTER YARDINGS QUALITY IMPROVED The advance of winter may certainly be responsible for the shorter yardings at Westfield, but the quality of the beef and veal coming forward is even better than that of a few weeks ago. Compared with late sales, the yarding of between 600 and 700 cattle was short, and competition as a result was keen, forcing the market up 7s 6d to 15s a head on late sales. Few inferior quality beasts came forward, and the quality generally was the best seen at Westfield for some weeks. Several lots of well-finished steers offered on account of Waikato graziers met keen competition. In the heifer and cow pens, also, the bulk of the animals were well finished, and mostly beef breeds, with few badly-finished dairy sorts. A line of big-framed, well-finished bullocks, not exceptionally prime, sold on account B. Reid, Wairangi, topped the market at £l4 2s 6d and averaged £l3 14s. Prime big-framed steers made from £ll 12s to £l3 12s 6d; smaller-framed and lighter-finished steers made from £lO 2s 6d to £ll 7s 6d; a line of small-framed well-finished P.A. steers averaged £9 2s6d: 18 months Hereford steers, not exceptionally well-finished, sold for £6 7s 6d. A choice line of prime P.A. heifers sold on account of a Waikato grazier, made to £9 2s 6d. An offering from the Ruakura State farm, not exceptionally well-finished, made to £8 2s 6d. Other prime heifers and young cows made from £6 17s 6d to £7 10s; smaller and lighter cows and heifers, from £5 to £6 10s. Prime big-framed old cows made to £7 10s. A shorter yarding of better quality calves as compared with last week resulted in a firm market. An extra choice runner on account of J. Landon, Papatoetoe, made £5 6s. Heavy vealers made from £2 15s to £3 Ss; medium. £2 5s to £3: lighter vealers, £1 15s to £2 ss: small and fresh-dropped, 3s to £1 Bs. YESTERDAY’S WOOL SALE COMPETITION KEEN The Loan and Mercantile Agency reports: There was a good attendance at the opening of the wool sale yesterday. Competition by Home and Continental buyers was active as compared with the close of preceding series, and prices ruled par to 5 per cent higher; Merino crossbred, fine, 5 per cent higher; crossbred coarse, 5 per cent to 75 per cent. The opening catalogues were fairly representative. STOCK EXCHANGES WELLINGTON, To-day. Sales reported: South British Insurance, 58s, 58s 3d; Wellington Woollen, pref., £ 6 Bs.
