GRANDPARENTS’ APPEAL
SUPPORT FOR ORPHANS (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter.') WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The absence of any provision in the Pensions Act for the payment of a pension to the guardians of orphan children is the basis of a petition which was presented to the House today by Mr. Savage, Auckland West, on behalf of Henry Laity Buckler. The petitioner’s son, formerly a railway clerk, died at Cambridge on July 31, 1926, and his wife died the following day without having obtained a widow’s pension to which she would otherwise have been entitled —and which could then have been drawn by the guardians of her children in the event of her death. The petitioner and his wife, who are w 11 advanced in years, now find themselves the guardians of four young children without any claim under the Pensions Act, the only alternative being a compassionate allowance which is the object of the petition.
