OVER £l2 A HEAD PAID IN TAXATION

LAST YEAR’S YIELD (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The Government Statistician’s fig ales of the taxation per head of the population of New Zealand during 1926-27 shows a fall of 2s 5d as compared with the rate for 1925-26. The taxation per head of the mean popu lation in 1925 was £l2 3s sd. In 1926 £l2 7s lid, and in 1927 £l2 5s 6d. The fall in Customs revenue in 192 C-27 was considerably less than might have been anticipated, and has been counterbalanced by a corresponding increase in revenue from death duties. The increase of £183,139 in the total revenue from taxation is to a certain extent fictitious being due entirely to the fact that approximately £150,000 of revenue, under section 24 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which in the normal course of events would have been collected during the last quarter of 1925-26, -was not paid into the Main Highways Account until early in 1926-27. Details are outlined for the past two years:—1926. 1927.
