“SLUM CONDITIONS”
AN ELLERSLIE PROTEST WORKER’S-DWELLING SETTLEMENT (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Strenuous objection is being lodged in a petition to the House by James George Edmonds, of 28 Findlay Street, Ellerslie, Lawry Settlement, because of his having suffered through what he terms slums to be erected in the vicinity of his house. He is the only occupier of a Government worker’s dwelling in the settlement and he complains that although he raised a protest at the time objections to valuation were being heard, he was not permitted to question the valuer. Others were allowed to do so, however. Petitioner declares that he had been trying for some time to secure a permit to erect a small shed near his, house, but this was refused. He asks that “in consideration that I am the only occupier of a Government worker’s dwelling in the Lawry Settlement who has had these slum conditions forced upon him, I have my unimproved value reduced to £IOO until all stables. « leds and the garage are moved to the proper distance from my boundary, as provided in the by-laws.”
