ONEHUNGA BOROUGH COUNCIL

A fairly extensive agenda was dealt with by the Onehunga Borough Council last evening, the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldicutt, presiding. The council repudiated a claim presented for £9l 8s lOd as its share of the costs incurred in the holding of the recent Auckland Water Commission. Councillors protested against such a most unfair charge, considering that Onehunga was in no way concerned with the setting-up of the commission, and that it was already in possession of its own adequate, pure and efficient water supply. The council decided that 14 days’ notice be given to all persons who had not yet connected their premises with the drainage, otherwise prosecutions will l>e instituted.

Eight different insurance companies sought the business of the council employees’ accident insurance. A ballot was resorted to, and an Australian firm secured the appointment. Resulting from a decision, at the previous meeting, the borough solicitor informed the council that it could not totally prohibit cattle-driving through the borough. Therefore, to place further restrictions upon drovers, the clerk was instructed to draft by-laws with that purpose in view. Papatoetoe Town Board inquired if the council would be likely to develop the Hunua water reserve, in conjunction with the One Tree Hill Road Board, in the near future. It was considered hopeless to promote any such scheme, at least for some years to come. The Mayor introduced a scheme for the beautifying of Jellicoe Part:, with rockery, fences, etc. He also urged the council to advocate the letting ot the blockhouse for the Plunket Society ard kindergarten purposes, which would create a most important addition to the assets of the borough. A committee is to be set up for these purposes. _____
