BEAM WIRELESS
ENGLAND TO SOUTH AFRICA OPENING DELAYED By Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright Reed. 9.5 a.m. Monday. The breaking of a filament in a highpower transmitting valve at Klipheuvel station delayed the official opening of the beam wireless service between South Africa and England, and held up the message of the Earl of Athlone, Governor-General of the Union, to the King, for half an hour. His Majesty replied: “J am convinced that every invention designed, as beam wireless is, to overcome distance, will be of the greatest value in promoting mutual understanding, and friendship between the nations of my Empire.” The service will be opened for public traffic on Tuesday and after that London will be in direct wireless communication with Capetown. The service will be available for telegrams to destinations in the Union of South Africa, Rhodesia, South-West Africa, Nyassaland and other southern parts of the Continent. The charges are to be Is 4d a word for ordinary telegrams, 8d a word for deferred telegrams and 4d a word for letter-telegrams. —A. and N.Z.
