TOOK NO RISKS

PRICE NOT LENGTHENED THE HORSE WON When Wedding Eve was being given training gallops over mile and quarter journeys at Randwick, many thought her mission was, following the Sydney Cup meeting, the Brisbane Cup. But that was not so. After having a run in the w.f.a. event on the opening day of the Q.T.C. meeting, she was relieved of her Cup engagement. There remained the mile and a quarter Moreton Handicap. Recalling, no doubt, that Mr. R. C. Allen, her owner, once smote them heavily when Balaton won a Brisbane Cup for him, the bookmakers were wary about Wedding Eve. A GOOD BET At the call of the card on Friday last Wedding Eve was the only horse whose quote they declined to lengthen. She opened at a double figure price, at which she was backed to win £3OOO at the price. Another Sydney horse in Bernesk was favourite at fives on the course. Wedding Eve, backed for the most part solely by big commissioners, touched sixes in places, but the small punters would have none of her. Yet she was a really good thing. The Judge said she won by only a neck, but it looked a comfortable length. Chryso was second and Lucy Thrice third. Never furthe back than third, Wedding Eve caught Chryso 50 yards from the post and, finishing strongly, landed a good stake for her connections. But perhaps Chryso would have done better | had his rider been more patient. He led early, dropped back fourth, was first into the straight, and was thus called upon to sustain his finishing run for nearly three furlongs. WINNING TACTICS. Adams saw to it that Wedidng Eve should have the last run at the leader, and those tactics won the race. Next time Mr. Allen brings a horse to Birsbane his judgment will be more widely respected. Donald, Rawhetu and Bernesk (Davidson’s mount), were never sighted. Davidson did not ride a winner; thus, once again, was it porved that jockeys cannot carry them home.
