GREAT HORSE HONOURED

NEW BRIGHTON CLUB PAYS FINE TRIBUTE TO CHAMPION PACER

At the annual . meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club, held last evening, members of the committee met Messrs. D. F. Glanville and D. Withers, part-owner and trainer respectively of Great Bingen. Mr. Glanville was presented with a fine red ribbon, on which was a golden buckle, bearing the following inscription: “Presented by the N.B.T.C. to Messrs. J. R. McKenzie and D. F. Glanville, owners of Great Bingen, winner of the York Handicap, two miles, 4min 21sec, March 15, 1927.” ONE OF WORLD’S BEST In making the presentation. the chairman, Mr. J. Johns, said that the effort of Great Bingen at the club’s Royal meeting entitled him to be

ranged as the greatest horse New Zealand had seen, and possibly one of the best in the world. All were pleased to see that Messrs. J. R. McKenzie and Glanville were the owners of the great horse, for both were sportsmen. The universal popularity of the owners and of Mr. D. Withers was the fitting tribute the public loved to pay. TRIBUTE TO REINSMAN He presented Mr. Withers with an engraved wristlet watch in commemoration of a great performance, in which the driving of the champion had played no minor part. Other members expressed appreciation of Great Bingen’s efforts, and those of the owners and the driver. Mr. Glanville apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr. McKenzie. The possession of the ribbon, he said, would result in Mr. McKenzie’s and his tossing for it, but it was bound to go to Mr. McKenzie. SPORTING OFFER Mr. Johns got over the difficulty by promising, on behalf of the club, to provide another ribbon, an exact replica of the one already given. A smoke concert terminated one of the most pleasant gatherings of trotting men that has been held in Christchurch.

Mr. Glanville presented the club with an engraved photograph of Great Bingen, and a party that included the Duke of York and Mr. E. X. Lelievere, breeder of the horse. It was also stated that at the next meeting of the New Brighton Trotting Club Great Bingen would make an attempt to lower the record of 3.13 for a mile and a-half at present held by Onyx.
