“DOLE” WITH £5,000
LOAFER FINED FOR FRAUD For falsely representing that he had no income other than 25s weekly benefit, so that he might receive extended unemployment benefit, John Boomer, of Straheden Street, Belfast, was fined £25, with the alternative of four months’ imprisonment. The prosecution’s case was that Boomer, at the time he made the application. had between £5.000 and £6,000 invested in gilt-edged securities and had a private income of more than £250 a year. For the defence it was stated that Boomer, who had been a cabinetmaker. got part of the money under the will of his mother and the rest was his own savings. In going through the form which he got from the bureau he made a mistake, thinking that it was not essential for him to show his unearned income.
