AN INITIAL SET-BACK

ONEHUNGA WOMEN’S REST £’ The Vestry of St. Peter’s Church, Oneliunga, has expressed to Onehunga Borough Council its resentment concerning the application to secure, for the erection of the proposed women’s rest, a site upon the churchyard at the corner of Church and Queen Streets. Last evening a letter was read from Mr. E. Wrigley, hon. secretary to the vestry, which was to the effect that the church Could not entertain the proposal that a portion of St. Peter’s churchyard be granted as a site for the rest room £as a borough jubilee memorial) not fColy on principle, but also from the fact that there are a number of graves the Queen Street frontage. The vestry also resented the fact that the trust board was communicated with on the subject, and “they think that, had the council given serious consideration to the matter they would have never asked for the site.”

This letter was received in silence, but later the Mayor, Mr. W. C. Coldieutt, observed that there was now no Shelving the object, as the residents relied upon forward action. Therefore, a site would have to be sought elsewhere and there were two suggestions sites already in view. • The Mayor and Crs. Morten, Campling and Speight were appointed as a committee to pursue the object desired.
