THE NEW REGENT
SEMI-FINALISTS’ NEW TEST Packing the New Regent Theatre completely last evening, another most enthusiastic audience accorded a tremendous reception to the four semifinalists in the “Miss New Zealand 1927” Screen. Quest, who appeared in a new test under actual studio conditions. With the Regent’s knowledge of stage-craft, and its extensive lighting and staging effects uged to full advantage, a most realistic “interior,” complete with a real movie camera man, has been arranged and the girls perform their tests under conditions similar to those which they would experience in Los Angeles. The task set them last evening was totally different to that of Saturday.' Each girl acquitted herself admirably and each was given a wonderful hearing.
Continuing its policy, the Regent will stage another new test this evening, the nature of it being kept a secret. It promises, however, to be even more interesting than its predecessors.
The principal picture on the bill, “London,” continues to intrigue pat-’ rons. A British production, specially written for the screen by Thomas Burke, of “Limehouse Nights” fame, shows popular Dorothy Gish, first as a girl of the slums and then as a Mayfair belle. The study in contrasts is vividly portrayed, and in addition the film is most remarkable for its innumerable views of all the places of interest in “The Mother City.”
A special musical programme is played by the superb Operatic Orchestra. under the baton of Maurice Guttridge. The overture is the beautiful
“Romantique,” by Keler Bela. Eddie Horton’g numbers at the mighty W’urlitzer include Schubert’s “Serenade” and “Lion du Bal.” An excellent comedy, Regent Review and Travelogue complete the bill.
