“LADY, BE GOOD”
DELIGHTFUL MUSICAL COMEDY Auckland audiences are being quite enraptured with the musical comedy, “Lady, Be Good” at His Majesty’s Theatre. In themselves the size of the houses are an indication of the quality of the production, playgoers being among the most discerning of humanity’s sections. “Lady, Be Good” is a delightful, witty, and pretty show, that will long be remembered with pleasure. Largely it is a dancing comedy, hung on the usual thin plot of its variety. Pretty stage effects, frocking that is extremely well designed, and a series of catchy refrains, that are by no means as stale as most of the music by the time the performances reach New Zealand, provide a background for dancing, comedy and quick movement that carry the show through three hours of fascinating entertainment.
“Lady, Be Good” is a far better and brighter show than “No. No, Nanette,” which the company played' in Auckland a few weeks ago, and its standard can be judged from that fact.
Several love stories are woven into the theme, which mainly concerns Judy and her brother, who are “living on the sidewalk with a policeman as butler,’’ and one Jack Robinson, son of a wealthy and deceased father just back from Mexico. The brother forsakes the girl he loves to marry an heiress, and Judy, aided by her lawyer, believing Robinson dead, impersonates his nonexistent widow. And so the story goes on until eventually it straightens out for the benefit of all concerned.
Mis Elsie Prince has an opportunity —which she takes—of dancing and singing herself into popularity; but the piece gives Jimmy Godden, as the lawyer, a role that can be made the outstanding one of the evening, and Mr. Godden does it complete justice. No piece could suit him better. Leonard Rich partners Miss Prince in several very attractive dance numbers, and Charlton Morton plays the fool very well. The leaders are well supported in all departments.
“Lady, Be Good” will continue throughout the week.
