OPOTIKI NEWS

What is claimed to be a remarkable incubation record has been achieved by Mrs. W. Megaw, of Opotiki. Recently 50 eggs, including one with a double yolk, were placed in the incubator, and in due course 51 chicks were hatched out. All of these chicks are alive. It is considered to be a most uncommon thing for a double yolk to hatch out two chicks and most people have never heard of such an occurrence.

At the monthly meeting of the Opotiki branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, the president, Mr. G. S. Moody, brought up the question of the completion of the East Coast railway from Taneatua to Opotiki. Mr. Moody said there was an attempt being made to quash the completion of the line. He wished to see the line completed to Opotiki and later on pushed on towards Gisborne. It was necessary to keep up the agitation owing to the move being made in Whakatane to have a coast road made to Opotiki in lieu of the railway. Opotiki was not interested in the proposed road as it would be of no benefit to the district. The matter was debated by members and the secretary was instructed to write to the various branches of the unicn in the Bay of Plenty, and also the Poverty Bay Union, asking lor their support in connection with the completion of the line to Opotiki. It was also decided to forward a remit to the annual meeting of the Bay of Plenty Development League, which will be held at Matata some time in August, urging the construction of the above-mentioned section of railway.
