BOYS’ SILVER BAND

A set of silver band instruments valued at £ 800 is one of Taumarunui’s possessions, but until a boys’ band was started recently the splendid instruments lay idle. Under the very able leadership of Mr. J. P. Curreen, this band is now making rapid headway, and there is every indication that it will prove a valuable asset to the town. Several public performances have been given by the boys, and each concert evidences a remarkable advance in musical skill. At present a ladies’ committee, under the direction of the Mayoress, Mrs. G. E. Manson, is busy*organising a monster fancy fair to be held on July 8 and 9, tho proceeds from which will go to assist the band finances. The following is the personnel of the band as at present constituted: Conductor, Mr. J. P. Curreen: drum-major, R. Smith; cornets, G. Wells, .T. McDermott, L. Rickards, M. Guthrie, J. Walker, W. Hopkins; soprano cornet, C. Bragg; fugel horn, K. Sanson; tenor horns, R. Simcock, A. Dawson, V. Mattar, W. Larsen, J. Leydon, F. Burrell: tenor trombones, R. Simmons, B. Managh, A. Crane. N. Campbell; baritones, A. Hughes, V. Moore, F. Lawler; euphonium, F. Woodmass and R. Robinson; G trombones, R. Smith and S. Managh; E fiat bass, R. Managh, A. Wolf, B. Reynolds; B flat bass, J. Wells, M. Managh, R. Webb; triangle, L. Leydon; kettle-drum, J. Robinson; bassdrum, R. Brown.
