Retired Grocer Beset By Illness
LUCKLESS BANKRUPT SURPLUS IN ESTATE when the liabilities <.£ 3.662 > 'were' set against securities (£4.050) in a bankrupt estate reviewed before the Official Assignee. Mr. G. N. Morris, at a creditors’ meeting to-day. Neither the bankrupt nor his wife. Mr. and Mrs. George David Rates, of Takapuna. was able to attend, owing to ill-health. Mr. C. Hough represented them. It was stated that Mr. Bates had been in business as a grocer at Devonport for many years. Retiring in 1922. he bought a property in Archer’s Road. Takapuna. which he could not work on account of his age and ill-health. After discussion of the position of the estate, the meeting was adjourned. The high integrity of Mr. Bates was emphasised in testimonials put before the meeting.
