KEEPING THE BOOKS
METHODS FOLLOWED AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB MEMBER’S CURIOSITY “TAOES the present secretary the books of the club, or has the club to call in other assistance to do that work?” asked Mr. J. Gleeson at the annual ! meeting of the Avondale Jockey , Club this afternoon, after recalling j that former secretaries always gave the books their immediate I care. He pointed out that no payment specified for outside bookkeeping was mentioned in the balance sheet. The President, Mr. Donald McLeod: In answer to your question, we call in outside assistance before and after every race meeting. Mr. Gleeson: What do you mean by “we” ? The President: I mean the secretary and his staff. NOT IN BALANCE SHEET Mr. Gleeson: What is the payment? It is not in the balance sheet. The president said that by giving 24 hours’ notice any member could inspect the books. Mr. Gleeson: That is quite satisfactory to me. The president said the amount paid for outside assistance totalled, roughly, £55 for the year. -i At a later stuge of the meeting Mr Gleeson asked if any provision was being made for the installation of an electric totalisator at the course when it reopened. The president said the committee had the matter under consideration. They realised an electric totalisator would give them an hour’s more betting each day. However, it was more than they could afford at present. OFFICERS ELECTED The following officers were elected: President, Mr. Donald McLeod; vicepresident, Mr. A. Davis; committee. Dr. C. C. Murphy, Messrs. J. Archibald. G. Baildon, A. Burt, W. Fallon, A. Hanna, F. T. Jefferies, J. Paterson, J. Raynes, J. E. Wells. Votes of thanks were passed to the president, officials, secretary and staff, to the Press, and to the Auckland Racing Club, for its assistance.
