OUTSPOKEN CRITICISM
"GAMBLING, A MUG’S GAME” REV. J. J. NORTH’S LECTURE Outspoken criticism «rf racing clubs in their desire for increased racing facilities was voiced by the Rev. J. J. North yesterday afternoonThe principal of the Baptist Theological College gave an eloquent address. entitled “Gambling—A Mug's Game." at a special meeting of men in the Xorth Memorial Baptist Church. Remuera. During the course of his lecture
the speaker made reference to the race clubs' proposals now before Parliament. He said the time of legislators is to be squandered again by the raemg clubs, which manage the great national extravagance. “The clubs are clamouring' in this year of public stringency for wider gambling facilities,” declared Mr. Xorth. “The condition of the labour market and of public finance matters nothing to them. Two years ago they clamoured for more race days. Xow they are shouting for double totalizators, and for telegraphic facilities, and for the aid of newspaper publicity regarding dividends^ “The issue is going to be whether the State is going to control gambling," said the speaker, “or whether gambling (under race club auspices') is going to control the State. Sir G. Hunter's Bill deserves short shrift."
