Fire ac Palmerston North. —A fire on Saturday damaged a house at Terrace Er.d owned by Mr. Stitchbury, of Auckland, and recently leased to Mr. Kendall, of Takapau. Radio Appointments.—Mr. H. Temple White has been appointed musical director of the new Wellington wireless station, 2YA. Miss Peyton has been appointed official pianist. Jockey’s Pall. —R. Allen, the rider of The Babe in the Dromore Steeplechase, at the Ashburton races on Saturday, was thrown from his horse at the last hurdle. He was taken to hospital, but was reported to be not seriously injured, no bones being broken. Conflicting Opinions. —“ That’s right, buss,” said Alexander McNaughton when he was asked to plead to a charge of drunkenness at the Police Court this morning. “I think it’s all wrong,” said the magistrate, Mr. McKean, as he fined McNaughton 10s, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. Christchurch Property Deal. —The Farmers’ Co-operative Association has sold its garage showroom property on the north side of Cashel Street to Messrs. Briscoe and Company, and a property opposite St. Paul’s Church to the Dunlop Tyre Company. In the same locality the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company has purchased a frontage on Cashel Street, opposite the Farmers’ Co-operative As--Bociation. The association is not concerned in this deal. Bridging the Avon. —The Court of •Appeal has reserved judgment on an appeal by the borough of New Brighton against an injunction granted by the Supreme Court restraining the oorough from proceeding with the erection of a concrete bridge over the River Avon, to take the place of the Present wooden bridge. The question was whether a work which might “ e adjudged a nuisance without statutory authority could be held to be a nuisance once the Governor-General had given authority for it.
