ROYAL NAVAL RESERVISTS

CRUISE IN WAKAKURA The minesweeper Wakakura returned to port on Saturday with 10 Royal Naval Volunteer Reservists who had been given eight days’ instruction in seamanship, rifle and revolver practice and navigation. The ship cruised in the Hauraki Gulf and anchored off Kawau to allow tug-of-wars and rowing races to be held. The knowledge of the trainees received a practical try-out when a call was received from the trawler James Cosgrove which had broken down. She was towed into port, the lads getting some idea of how a salvaging operation is carried out.

Motor-Cycle Tour Round World.— Mr. S. T. Glarifield and Air-Sergeant Sparkes have started from London on a ■world tour in two motor-cycle “combinations.” They will use their side-cars as beds. The travellers expect to complete the trip in 120 days, via Constantinople, Bombay, the Straits Settlements, Australia, and America. — A. and N.Z.-Sun.

Car-Snatching in England.—Miss Betty Baldwin, daughter of the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin, was a victim of one of the many “car-bor-rowing” episodes in London. Miss Baldwin left her own two-seater car while she was shopping in Kensington. It was found abandoned in the West I End. —A. and N.Z.-Sun.
