THE STRAND
HUMPHREY BISHOP COIt is interesting to note that the personnel of the Humphrey Bishop Co., which, is having such a successful season at the Strand Theatre, has undergone some changes. Several of the old favourite remain, notably Mr. Bishop himself; Mr. Walter Kingsley, the eminent London baritone; Miss Lalie Whyte, the brilliant soprano; George ("Scratcher”) Ross, who is a tower of strength to the company; Mr. Frank Evan violinist; Mr. Norman Johns, cornetist. The newcomers include Mr. Mark Leslie, the well-known London comedian; Mr. Fred Webber, the versatile tenor; Miss Dorothy Ryder, a charming soubrette; Mr. Dan Flood, piano humorist; Mr. Charles Albert, dame comedian; Mr. Alan Kitson, light comedian; Miss Elaine Maye, “the electric spark”; Mr. Billy Barry, jazz drummer; Miss Marie Landon, solo dancer; Miss Evadne Royle, comedienne. The chief pictorial attraction will be "The Ranger of the Big Pines,” from
the story. “Cavanagh, Forest Ranger,” by Hamlin Garland. The cast is a strong one and includes such players as Kenneth Harlan, Helene Costello and Robert Graves. The story is laid chiefly in the Western cattle country, where Lize Weatherford (Eulalie Jensen), a courageous woman and a pioneer of the district, conducts a hotel. She sends her daughter, Virginia, to a boarding school to be educated, and when the girl returns home she is bitterly disappointed with her surroundings. Virginia meets Ross Cavanagh, one of the rangers, an Easterner of good family, but her mother warns the girl against falling in love with him, as she considers him to be in a somewhat different class to her own. Continual strife is being waged against the rangers by Sam, Gregg, a cattle owner,
and his son Joe, and when Virginia hears that an attack is to be made on Cavanagh she hastens to his cabin and gives him warning. Gregg’s band attacks, but in a sensational battle Cavanagh succeeds in repelling them, and the film comes to a happy conclusion when the two young people are united.
