HOLDING UP EMPLOYMENT
sir,— A deputation of some 50 unemployed waited upon the manager of “Dixieland” seeking employment on the new baths. They were informed that the question of constructing the baths was before the court, the City Council having challenged the rights of the company to construct the baths, notwithstanding the Government’s having granted the permit* but as soon as the question was settled there would be employment for at least one hundred men. I enclose a short report of some comments on the subject. First Interjector: It’s a pity some of those councillor jokers are not hungry! Second Interjector: Why should the council want to stop the baths, when they have three of their own that are losing them many hundred pounds a year? . . ... Third Interjector: I live out at the Point, and I know the council has never spent one shilling on the park. There is not even a bench to sit down on in the whole place, with ( the exception of the few that Dixieland put around. DISGUSTED.
