LATE MR. A. JOHNSTON OLD MASTERTON SETTLER An old and respected settler of the Waikato. Mr. Alexander Johnston, has died at the age of 93, at his residence, Paterangi. Born in Kirkcudbridgeshire in 1834, Mr. Johnston emigrated to South Australia in 1852, and arriving in New Zealand in 1864. he took up land near Masterton, which he farmed until 1901, when he went to the Waikato. He took a keen interest in Dominion affairs all through his life, until just a few weeks before his death. In 1870 Mr. Johnston married Miss Jane Bowler, daughter of the late Joseph Bowler, and stepdaughter of the late Joseph Masters 4 founder of Masterton. They celebrated their golden wedding seven years ago. Mr. Johnston leaves his wife, four sons and five daughters. The sons are Messrs. A. K. Johnston. Hastings: G. G. Johnston, Paterangi: N. B. Johnston. Kaipara Flats, and R. N. Johnston, Puhoi.
The daughters are Mrs. Alex. Grant, Masterton: Mrs. J. Halligan. Johnsonville: Mrs. C. Bowler. Otorohanga: and Misses K. and L. Johnston. Pnterangi. Another son. Keith, was killed in action in France.
