NEGLECTED FARMSFULL DOSS-HOUSES
DRIFT TO THE TOWNS MR. MASON’S CRITICISM (THE SUR'S Parliamentary Reporter.) *• WELLINGTON, Friday. “We have in Auckland a soupkitchen distributing f,600 meals weekly, and a doss-house accommodating 80 men a night,” declared Mr. H. G. R. Mason in the House of Representatives to-night. While this was going on there were less people on the land than there were last year, and people were ready to go on good land If it were provided. The Hon. A. D. McLeod: You can take it from me nobody wants to go on the land to-day. Mr. Mason criticised the Government for raising the rate of interest on loans, and said that it charged the public 5i per cent., or half per cent, higher than it paid for it.
Mr. McLeod: Would 3 r ou have us lend money at a loss?
Mr. Mason: The Government is prepared to suffer a small loss in other directions if circumstances warrant it.
