MORE THAN USEFUL
Harold Thorpe’s win in the Prince of Wales Handicap last Wednesday marks the fifth besides a dead heat that this gelding has attained during the present season, his others being made in the Improvers’ Handicap at the Auckland Spring Meeting, the Rakaia Handicap at the Ashburton Autumn Meeting, the President’s Handicap at Oamaru, and the Au Revoir Handicap at Addington on June 3. while he ran a dead heat with Talent in the Te Puni Handicap at the Wellington Summer Meeting. Harold Thorpe’s winnings for the present season total £1,772 10s. He is a six-year-old gelding by Our Thorpe from Play Soon, and was bred by the Southland sportsmen Messrs. Stevenson and McMath, who have handled many good ones, including Win Soon 4.31, winner of the 1914 New Zealand Cup. Win Soon is three-quarter sister to Play Soon, dam of Harold Thorpe, both being by sens of Rothschild from Topsy by Macletan from a thoroughbred mare. Harold has won over aI! distances, and next season he should be found taking a prominent part in the decision of some* of the Dominion’s chief events.
