PRICE-FIXING TACTICS NOW ABANDONED

ISLAND ORANGE SELLERS WAIPAHI LIFTS CARGO As with butter, so with oranges, price-fixing is apparently doomed to failure. About a month ago. the Island trader Waipahi called in at the Cook Group, and the small cargo lifted resulted in a loss to those responsible for the vessel making the trip. The Islanders had fixed a price for their produce and agreed to take nothing less. Buyers considered the price asked excessive, and the situation appeared at a deadlock. During the past week the Waipahi has again been around the Islands, and information to hand indicates that the vessel is obtaining a good cargo and will land approximately 15,000 cases in Auckland next week.

The native sellers have apparently accepted the terms offered by the New Zealand importers, which allows a net profit of from 4s 6d to 5s 6d a case after allowing for the cost of the case. The heavy handling and shipping charges which accrue before the fruit reaches the mart are, of course, additional.
