WESTERN KING

The arrival of the Australian crack pacer, Western King, yesterday created quite a stir in local light harness circles, and all afternoon there was a steady stream of visitors to Mr. J. Shaw’s stables to get a peep at Mr. M. Moodabe’s new purchase. The four-year-old son of Rock Huon and Hopefield Maid is undoubtedly a fine looking animal, and with the exception of being a triflle close in front, is fautless. The Australian has the typical thoroughbred head, is clean legged, possesses a diaphragm of great depth, and above ail is well mannered and docile. Western King is built for speed, and if he does not turn out trumps, when properly acclimatised, then “Abaydos” will feel inclined to lose faith in all horse flesh. A splendid tribute to the imported horse was paid by Mr. Veon Collelo, the wellknown Hawke's Bay galloping trainer, and expert judge of horses, who, after close scrutiny, remarked: “I can find no fault in hirn.” Owner Moodabe and trainer Shaw are anxious to get Western King ready for the races next week-end, and he is in good condition to commence duty right away. Whether the Aussie champion will start or not on June 18, depends upon the arrival of his papers before the closing time of the acceptances. It is owing to the delay in transit of the necessary papers that Western King’s handicap is held over.
