Women Police
APPOINTMENT LIKELY NOT READY FOR JURORS Press Association. WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister of Justice, the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, to-day received a deputation from the National Council of Women, when the president, Mrs. Fraer, laid before him resolutions passed at the recent conference in Christchurch. Mr. Rolleston, replying, said that, with regard to women police, he was already considering an appointment. He promised to consider the appoint ment of a woman to the Prisons •Board a vacancy occurred. The country, iwas not ready for women jurors. The chief difficulty in the payment of prisoners was that the department did not get value for such payment in the case of short-sentence prisoners, and at present that was a consideration; also it should -not be the obligation of the State to provide completely for a prisoner’s dependants.
Mr. Rolleston promised to look into the marriage age and other matters. He was glad to hear that the council was against the flogging of prisoners for sexual offences.
On the question of equal guardianship, Mr. Rolleston said that he thought the act passed last year gave the mother every equality with the father in guardianship.
