SCHEME TO DRAIN CABBAGE-TREE SWAMP

TENDER ACCEPTED OPENING UP SUBURBS Last evening a combined meeting of the Mount Albert and the Mount Eden borough councils accepted Mr. W. T. Dibble’s tender of £27,634 10s for the prevention of storm water flooding the Mount Eden, Mount Albert, Mount Roskill and Epsom districts and also for the drainage of Cabbage Tree Swamp, Edendale. If the scheme is a success a large area in Cabbage Tree Swamp will become available for building purposes. The Edendale district has grown rapidly and the drainage will help it still further. Nine tenders were received for the work, which was originally estimated to cost £31,297. It is expected that the work will be completed in 12 months. It was stated last evening that a sewer will be constructed from the foot of Parrish Road, Edendale, to the east bank of Meola Creek, opposite the Mount Albert Grammar School. An overflow chamber will take the storm water and sewage from Cabbage Tree Swamp. A separation will take place at that spot, the storm water flowing through a new sewer into Meola Creek and the sewage into No. 8 branch sewer. Storm water from the low-lying areas on the Mount Eden side of Edendale Road will also be carried away by the new sewer into Meola Creek.

The plans have been prepared by Mr. . E. Powell.

Mr. W. H. Cook, the engineer to the Mount Albert Borough Council, will superintend the work and Mr. J. Rogers, engineer to Mount Eden Borough Council, will confer with him when necessary.

As Cabbage Tree Swamp is privately owned, only the main sewer will be put through it and all reticulation work will have to be done privately. The same conditions apply to the land on St. Luke’s Road. Morningside. which is practically a continuation of Cabbage. Tree Swamp,
