Airs. Gillick, the English artist, has at least two claims to fame —she has revived the portrait medals of the Italian Renaissance, and she has never had anything returned from the Royal Academy. Her biggest piece of work is the stone panel over the entrance to the new wing of Crosby Hall, which was unveiled by the Duchess of York not long ago. AUSTRALIAN LAURELS An educational establishment which has a remarkable list of “firsts” to its credit in the achievements of its old girls is the Alelbourne Presbyterian Ladies’ College. Dame Nellie Melba is the most famous of its front-rank-ers. Dr. Alargaret White (now the wife of Dr. Alartell) was the first woman medico to qualify in Victoria; Dr. Constance Ellis, the first woman in Australia to take the degree of Doctor of Aledicine; Aliss Flos Greig, the first woman barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and in the Commonwealth; Dr. Barbara Wood, the first woman to take the diploma of Radiology at Cambridge; Ladv AleEachern, the first Lady Alayoress of Alelbourne; Aliss Vida Goldstein, the first woman to stand for Parliament in Victoria; and a woman student topped the list of honour graduates of the medical school for the first time when Dr. Kathleen Daly accomplished the feat in 1923. UNCLAIMED LEGACIES After living together at Chetham Hill, Manchester (England) for manv years, Miss Mary and Miss Ann Rus'- | sell, both over eighty, recently died ! within a couple of days of each other.
