TAILOR STANDS TRIAL

PLEA OF “NOT GUILTY” “Accused seems to be one o£ those unfortunate people with perverted impulses,” said Mr. S. L. Paterson at the Supreme Court yesterday, of John McDonald (57), tailor, who was charged with indecent assault on a male. His Honour Mr. Justice Stringer presided. Mr. R. Singer appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. Mr. Paterson, for ‘the Crown, outlined occurrences at McDonald’s shop, which led up to a surprise visit by detectives. After the Crown case had closed the hearing was adjourned until to-day. An astonishing defence was put up by McDonald when he gave evidence this morning. He declared that the chief witness for the prosecution had made overtures to him, and he (McDonald) had tried to shield the young man. In cross-examination the prisoner admitted that he was charged in a case in 1919. At that time a man was trying to rob him. The jury decided that they would like to visit the tailor’s premises in Queen Street during the lunch hour. (Proceeding.)
