START OF SEASON TWENTY TEAMS COMPETE GROUNDS DIFFICULTY ACUTE 9 The Auckland Ladies’ Hockey Association announces the opening of its 1927 season, which is fixed for next Saturday, May 7. The first executive meeting was held in two sections, the first on Wednesday, April 27, the others last Monday. Miss Dawson presided over a full attendance of delegates at each meeting. It was reported that all attempts to secure suitable additional playing areas were unavailing. The Auckland Hockey Association had intimated that there was more accommodation for ladies’ competitions than was first anticipated, providing the majority of the ladies’ games commenced each Saturday at 1.10 p.m. It was decided to affiliate with the New Zealand Ladies’ Association. Applications for entry were accepted from twenty teams, which were graded as follow: Senior Grade (eight teams) —Arawa Mount Eden, St. Cuthbert’s College, Somerville, University, Y.W.C.A., one team each, and Training College, two teams. Junior Grade (twelve teams). —Inter House, Mount Eden, Papakura, St. Cuthbert’s College, Somerville, University, Wesley, one team each: Y.W.C.A., three teams; Training College, two teams. Application for leave of absence from games was received from the Training College and St. Cuthbert’s College Clubs, who desired to be free from matches on May 21 and 28, College teams being on vacation on those dates. Waiau Pa won from Kohekohe by default. “Avery Cup” Competition (ladies). — Waiuku A beat Te Kohanga, 4 goals to 1; Whiri Whiri beat Mauku, 10 goals to 2.
