BOXING CONTROL

N.B.A. £7OO DOWN LACK OF PUBLIC SUPPORT At the annual meeting of the Northern Boxing Association, held last evening, the px'esident, Mr. E. A. Craig, stated that the loss of £7OO, as compared with the previous year, indicated a lack of public support. He would not say th~t the apathy shown was the result of bad matching of either professional or amateur contests. On the whole, the contests throughout the year had been well up to the standard. Bouts of 10 and 15 rounds had been tried, but nevertheless all the matches, with the exception of on,e or two, had failed to draw paying: houses: "The financial depression so marked in the city is the sole cause of these losses,” said Mr. Craig. ENCOURAGING BOXERS

The committee have given particular attention throughout the year to the encouragement of the amateurs, and assistance had been given to a much greater extent than the bare statement of help mentioned in the report indicated. A question often asked to the association was why it did net get first-class men from abroad. Under the present regulations, the maximum professional purse did not attract the men required. Furthermore, the committee had been loth to engage overseas talent, and had by every way possible encouraged New Zealand boxers, in the interest of the sport in the Dominion. ELECTION OF OFFICERS

The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, his Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson; president, Mr. E. A. Craig; vicepresidents, Messrs. J. W. Russell, J. Gillett, J. W. Brown, F. Burns, W. E. Dervan, J. Gillies, M. Ricketts, J. A. B. Hellaby, W. Luke, T. P. Pountney, G. Bush, R. W. Rugg; auditor. Mr. P. R. Fraser; hon. custodian, Mr. J. W. Brown; hon. secretary.
