“CARBINE’S HERITAGE”

HIPPODROME, EMPRESS AND QUEEN’S Good sporting films are few and farbetween, and it is a pleasant surprise to find that in “Carbine’s Heritage” New Zealand has been able to produce an original film and an entertaining one. The first screening at the Hippodrome and Empress Theatres last night drew immense crowds and, in order not to disappoint patrons, the management has decided to screen the film at the Queen’s Theatre from to-night, as well as at the other two. Queues were waiting outside the shows long before starting time last night. Formed with the intention of exploiting the wonderful scenic beauties of New Zealand, and the producing of plays that should prove of more general and educational interest than the imported article, the Moa Films claim in the pioneer production, “Carbine’s Heritage,” to have a film worthy to rank with any yet made in Australasia, an opinion shared by those experts who have witnessed a screening. The author and producer, who is also an expert cinematogUiphist, Mr. E. Coubray, is responsible for the filming of tile various scenes, and well he has performed his work. The story centres round the doughty Carbine, whose deeds on the New Zealand and Australian turf are of world-wide fame, and it contains a strong romantic interest, while the humorous side is well maintained throughout the production. Those who have been privileged to see the wonderful gardens at Ellerslie in the summer will have an idea of how these could be used as a background for film purposes, and this has been done excellently in the preparation of “Carbine’s Heritage”; while the stirring contest for the last Auckland Cup is* a feature of the story A strong east includes Mdlle. Lola D’Ormonde, Miss Queenie Grahame, Mr. Stuart Douglas, and a strong force of capable performers.
