BUSY COURTS

WORK AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Corespondent.) HAMILTON, To-day. Records of the court business dealt with at Hamilton during the past quarter indicate that a large volume has been handled, making the district one of the busiest in New Zealand. In the Supreme Court the criminal sittings occupied seven days, true bills being returned in all eight cases. Six persons were convicted and two acquitted. There was only one application for restoration of conjugal rights in divorce proceedings, while 10 applications for dissolution of marriage were dealt with. Seven decrees nisi were issued and seven made absolute. Probates and letters of administration handled numbered 39. Under the chattels section 193 securities and 51 satisfactions were filed. Bankruptcies occupied six sitting days. Some 19 debtors’ petitions were filed and eight creditors’ petitions. Discharges granted totalled 10. A total of 26 sales were conducted by mortgagees through the registrar. Fees collected amounted to £874 11s 3d. The civil returns for the Supreme Court* show that 26 actions were commenced, the amounts claimed totalling £21,017 9s lOd. Cases tried and decision given numbered 14, judgment for plaintiff being entered on 11 occasions. Civil plaints entered in the magistrate’s court totalled 486 and the sums sued for* amounted to £9,156 9s 6d. Some 276 cases were tried, in which £5,391 16s lid was claimed, £4,851 13s being recovered. Arrests made during the quarter ended March 31 totalled 59 (two females), while 200 summonses (including four females) were issued. Juvenile offenders dealt with numbered 15, one being a girl.
